Earl S. Mayes

Earl S. Mayes, age 89, of Morristown, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 at Heritage Center. He was a member of Kidwells Ridge Baptist Church for 70 years and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was standing on a ship looking at another ship where the Peace Treaty was being signed to end the war. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Occupational Medal. He was known for his witty sense of humor which remained until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mayes; parents, J.W. and Abby Mayes; son-in-law, Ernie Strickland; grandson, Donald Shane Shipley; brothers, O.W. Mayes and James “Ikey” Mayes; sisters, Johnnie Kate Holder and Ruth Cowan; and special friend and brother-in-law, Don Cowan. He is survived by his sons, Donnie Mayes and Scott Mayes; daughters, Chris Strickland and Paula Shipley; grandchildren, Lisa Long, Jessie Mayes, Jimmy Mayes, and Travis Shipley; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family extends special thanks to Calvin Cowan, Norma McClanahan, and Dr. Gupta.  The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, August 28 at Kidwells Ridge Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. at the church with Rev. Travis Webb officiating. Military graveside service will follow at Kidwells Ridge Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Daily Bread or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown.
