Margaret (Riggs) Matthews

September 20, 1933 ~ December 7, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old


Margaret Riggs Matthews, went home to Heaven to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 7, 2017 after a long, lengthy illness. She was 84 years young! There to meet her was her dear husband, Eddie. She is finally where she lived to be! She was a loving, Christian mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her friends were family in her heart. She was an inspiration to all who knew her well. “Good and Faithful Servant” defined her well. She touched many lives with her sweet giving spirit. In all of her suffering, her deep faith in her Lord always shined through. She was a member of Cherokee Hills Baptist Church where she was instrumental in starting “The Golden Nuggets” Senior Group. She taught Sunday School on various age levels. She was retired from Reynold Jeffrey. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward H. Matthews; parents, Ernest Hales Riggs and Georgia Morrison Riggs; brothers, Bill Riggs and Marion Riggs; sister, Myrtis Riggs Wheeler; and niece, Eugenia Wheeler. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Mike) Johns of Morristown; sons, Dwayne (Kim) Matthews of Paris, TN and Danny (Lora) Matthews of Lenoir City, TN; her beloved grandchildren, Chris (Kelly) Johns, Courtney Johns, Amanda Matthews, Katie Matthews, Abby (Andy) Buckner, Megan Matthews, and Bradley Matthews; her precious great-grandchildren, Lucas Johns, Koko Johns, and Bodie Buckner; special friends, Don and Joann Johnston, Emmitt and Wanda Hagood, Joy Hartsell, and Sue Scott; and many other special friends, extended family, and her sweet, loving church family. Special thanks to Vickie Dearing, her caregiver, with whom she made her home over the last several months. The family would also like to thank Dr. Rajeev Gupta and his wonderful staff for loving and caring so deeply for Mother. Also, heartfelt thanks to all the nurses and staff of U.T. Homecare and Avalon Hospice for their exceptional care. The family will receive friends from 1 - 3 p.m. Saturday, December 9 at Cherokee Hills Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church with Dr. Nathan Livingston, Pastor of Cherokee Hills Baptist Church and Dr. Gene Nelson, Pastor of Russellville Baptist Church officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 10th at Hamblen Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Mother’s wish was any contributions be made to: The Building Fund of Cherokee Hills Baptist Church. Arrangements by Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown.
