Nellie Maude Johnson, age 110, born December 16, 1906, of Morristown, passed away Friday, November 3, 2017 at Heritage Center. As of December 2016, Nell was the thirty-third oldest living citizen in the United States. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie Walton Johnson. She moved to Morristown at a young age and graduated from Morristown High School and also attended Morristown College. She grew up with five sisters, Misses Clara, Cleo, Willie Joe, Daisy, and Elizabeth Johnson, all of Morristown; and four brothers, Richard, Van, James, and Eugene Johnson, all of Morristown. Nell was an active member of Young’s Temple A.M.E. Zion Church and was a Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer for over forty years. Nell was a class leader for fifty years and participated as a choir member, member of the Women’s Home and Over Seas Missionary Society, active in Christian Endeavor, and was on the Stewardess Board. Nell worked all of her life as a homemaker for many families and devoted her life to her church, family, and job. Nell was a blessing to everyone she came into contact with and was very loving and kind. We all have learned many valuable lessons from this precious lady. Nell contributed her long life to hard work and being faithful to the Lord. Nell was the only survivor of her immediate family, however, she has a nephew, James Johnson and a great niece, Keisha Johnson, who both live out of town. Special thanks to the staff at Heritage Center for the love and kindness that was shown to Nell for the past seventeen years. The family will receive friends from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 5 at Young’s Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with Rev. Luke Curry officiating. Interment will follow at Rock of Ages Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to the Young’s Temple A.M.E Zion Church: 328 W.
