Douglas “Doug” Wendell Akins, age 78, of Whitesburg, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville. He was a member of Peace Freewill Baptist Church and retired from Boilermakers Local 453. He served in The U.S. Navy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Pat Akins; and brother, Norman Akins. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Akins; sons, Wendell (Susan) Akins of Whitesburg, and Tim (Becky) Akins of Kissimmee,FL. ; daughter, Kim (Bo) Greer of White Pine; step daughters, Jeanne (Jeff) Howington of Russellville, and Robin (Scott) Williamson of Maryville; brother, Jim Akins; 14 grand children, several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, March 7th at Peace Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm Wednesday with Rev. Chris Dotson officiating. Family and friends will meet for an 11 am Military Graveside Service on Thursday, March 8th at Hamblen Memory Gardens. In Lieu of flowers family request donations may be made to St. Judes in his memory. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown.
