Vernon Wendell DeBord, 75, of Talbott, went to be with Jesus to receive his new body in Christ on Monday, May 20, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He passed at home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kate DeBord Wolfe. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Hurd DeBord; children Wendy (Billy) Smith, Chris (Melissa) Jones, Mike (Candace) DeBord, Kyle Sellers, and Annette (Kevin Hatfield) Waddell; and grandchildren Kristen Grizzell, Dylan Jones, Brittany Kyle, and Josh Waddell. In addition, he leaves special people that he loved as if they were family: brothers, Terry (Linda) Collins, Joe (Claudia) Arnold, Ron (Judy) Smith, Jimmy (Lou) Peoples, and daughter Tasha Crider. Vernon loved nothing more than being with the people he loved the most - his family and friends. He dedicated his life to being a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved the Lord and enjoyed listening to old gospel music. Both he and Carolyn are members of Holt’s Baptist Church. Vernon joined the Morristown Rescue Squad in 1965. He was passionate about his volunteer service and was the first director of the Hamblen EMS. Throughout the years he held numerous positions within local, regional, and state levels of the Rescue Squad, including two terms as Tennessee State President. The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 p.m. Saturday, May 25th at Westside Chapel Funeral Home with the funeral following at 7 p.m. with Reverend Charles Mills and Brandon Young officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26th at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank the staff from Tennova Hospice, specifically Angie Raines-Jarnigan, who loved Vernon and the family as her own. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Morristown Rescue Squad or the Alzheimer’s Association.
